Two doctors struck off register

KUALA LUMPUR, March 16 (Bernama) — Two doctors have been struck off the medical register for serious breach of discipline, Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) President, Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican, disclosed today.

In a statement, he said, Dr Nusyirwan Mohd Syukur was found guilty of falsely claiming to be a graduate of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia when he was in fact a graduate of University of North Sumatera, Indonesia.

He was also found quilty of absconding from his place of practice and making false accusation of wrongful dissmisal against his employers and demanding monetary compensation. He has appealed to the High Court.

The other, Dr Zuabidah Zabidin was found guilty of allowing an unqualified person to attend, treat and prescribe scheduled poisons to patients without her or any other registered practitioner’s supervision.

She did not appeal.

Dr Mohd Ismail, who is also the Director-General of Health, said seven other doctors were suspended for periods ranging from three months to two years, while four others were reprimanded.

Their offenses included professional negligence and issuing medical certifcates to foreign workers with false or misleading documentation.

Dr Mohd Ismail hoped other doctors would learn from this and avoid making such mistakes.

Last year, the MMC had received 87 complaints. — BERNAMA
