Terengganu will not send students to Indonesia anymore

KUALA TERENGGANU, Sept 30 (Bernama) — Beginning this year, the Terengganu government will not be sending students to pursue their studies in Indonesia anymore as several incidents in the republic has caused fear among the students and parents.

Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Said, however, said the state government would not call back students who were already there.

"We don”t want to send new students to Indonesia because our students are easily traumatised by earthquakes,” he told reporters here today.

Furthermore, he said the parents were also worried of their children”s safety especially with the current “unhealthy developments” (anti-Malaysia protests by vigilante groups) in Indonesia.

At present, Ahmad said Terengganu had its eyes on Cuba as the new destination for its students to pursue studies in biotechnology and nanotechnology.

Meanwhile, the menteri besar said Terengganu was also planning to send 150 students to study medicine in other countries next year, as compared to 107 this year and 45 in 2008.

He said this was because the number of female doctors in the hospital in Terengganu right now was higher than the number of male doctors and the state government had to take some action to balance the numbers.
